Description:

Read any climbing literature and you’ll find a section advising you to throw yourself off regularly in order to overcome a fear of falling. But why is climbing one of the few sports to advocate practising failure? Is there good science behind this approach? And what if this training made your fears worse?

In this lecture full of practical tips, Dr Rebecca Williams will unpack some of the reasons why we fear falling, how falling practice is supposed to work, a model of exposure therapy, and all the myriad reasons falling off can actually make things worse.  Expect to come away with a better understanding of when, why and how to fall, and if falling isn’t right for you, what you can do instead to focus your mind on climbing not falling.

Dr Rebecca Williams is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Psychological Performance Coach, who specialises in helping climbers improve their performance through learning evidence based techniques to manage fear and develop confidence.  She’s been working with climbers of all ages, abilities and disciplines for the last 12 years, and last year gave the psychology key note speech at the International Rock Climbing Research Association symposium in Chamonix, Beyond Mental Skills Training: developing psychologically resilient climber-athletes.
